Happy International Women’s Day! To all the strong women who have influenced me, to the strong woman that I hope to become (and hopefully am becoming), to the strong women whom I’ve yet to meet, and to the women and girls I will encounter and encourage, let’s celebrate.
I found this video from Miss Representation particularly moving. Fashion magazines and the culture surrounding high fashion has been slated as one of the causes of low self-esteem among young women. However, I believe that we can reclaim fashion. We can use fashion to empower ourselves.
Fashion is a way to pay homage to our unique identides and creativity. Let’s celebrate our beauty: physical beauty that comes in all shapes and sizes; that transcends age, race, and color; that breaks the images that society and media has imposed upon us. Let’s take back these images of beauty and tell them what beauty means to us. The, let’s celebrate our beauty: our beautiful souls.
Use fashion to create our own definitions. Use fashion to make a statement about who we are: funky colors and complex patterns, muted color pallets, puckered textures, smoothness of silk. Use fashion as an outlet to express ourselves.
Today, let’s celebrate us! Happy International Women’s Day!
